Extending Mine
Life at Newmont
Boddington

Newmont Boddington is proposing changes to its approved operating area to ensure continued operations to 2046. This will include an increase in the size of the mine area which will be evaluated by state and federal regulators. Newmont is committed to transparency with our community and other stakeholders, so we are seeking your feedback in relation to the proposed mine life extension.

Newmont Boddington operates a gold and copper mine located in the Shire of Boddington, about 130 kilometres south of Perth and 16 kilometres from the town of Boddington. Most of the operation is located on Newmont freehold land, with some areas within State Forest.

The most recent major environmental approval was the Life of Mine (LOM) Extension Project granted in 2014 by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, and by the Federal Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.

These approvals allowed for expansion of the open pits, waste rock landforms, new water storage dams and a new tailings storage facility (known as a Residue Disposal Area or RDA). The approvals allowed for operations until 2041.

As we move through the design phase for the new tailings dam, some additions to the approved footprint area have been identified. These changes will support an extension of mine life up to 2046. This new disturbance will be referred to the state and federal environmental regulators in 2025 for environmental impact assessment.

Project fact sheets and baseline studies are available here for external stakeholders to review. We would welcome your feedback via email at boddingtonlom@newmont.com.

The interactive figure below shows the footprint area currently approved under Newmont Boddington’s Ministerial Statement (MS971) and the current proposed amendments. This footprint area will continue to be refined and this will be updated as the study progresses.

These layers can be turned on and off by selecting the items you wish to see highlighted below:

Possible threatened ecological communities that do not meet survey criteria or that are not adequately defined are added to the Priority Ecological Community (PEC) List under priorities 1, 2 and 3. The PEC shown here are variations of the Mount Saddleback Heath Communities types G1 and G3 are classified as P1 which are poorly known from few occurrences with a restricted distribution. The G4 vegetation type is not classified as PEC but is included here as it is considered a conservation significant community by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).
The Approved Footprint underwent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes under State and Federal legislation and was approved in 2014 (MS971 and EPBC 2012/6370).
This footprint is being referred to the State and Federal environmental regulators in 2025 and will undergo EIA. This footprint will allow for safe construction and operation of the new tailings storage facility (RDA2).
