Executive Leadership Team

Tom Palmer, President and Chief Executive Officer

Tom Palmer became President and Chief Executive and joined the Board of Directors of Newmont effective October 1, 2019. He served as President since June 2019 and as President and Chief Operating Officer from November 2018 until June 2019. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since May 2016. Mr. Palmer was elected Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific in February 2015 after serving as Senior Vice President, Indonesia since March 2014. Prior to joining Newmont, he was the Chief Operating Officer, Pilbara Mines at Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Over a 20-year career with Rio Tinto, Mr. Palmer worked in a variety of roles across a number of commodities, including General Manager, Technology for the Bauxite and Alumina business; General Manager, Operations at Hail Creek coal mine; and General Manager, Asset Management at Palabora Mining Company in South Africa. Mr. Palmer brings extensive experience leading teams and delivering production while implementing safety culture programs and improving diversity. He earned a Master of Engineering Science degree and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Rob Atkinson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Rob Atkinson joined Newmont in June 2019 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. With 25 years of mining industry experience, Rob has held a variety of roles leading operations and business improvement efforts in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Most recently, he served as Head of Productivity and Technical Support for Rio Tinto and was responsible for the company's $5 billion productivity improvement strategy. Rob also served as Chief Operating Officer for Rio Tinto's portfolio of copper interests in Mongolia, the US, Chile and Indonesia. Previously he led ASX-listed Energy Resources of Australia as Chief Executive and Director, and served as General Manager of Weipa Bauxite, one of the world's largest bauxite operations. During his tenure with Rio Tinto, Rob oversaw the establishment of three technical centers of excellence, including Surface Mining, Underground Mining and Processing. He also has extensive operational experience in iron ore and surface and underground coal mining. He holds a 1st Class Honors Bachelor's degree in Mining and Petroleum Engineering from Strathclyde University in Scotland.

Nancy K. Buese, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Nancy K. Buese was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective October 31, 2016. Ms. Buese brings 25 years of experience in finance leadership roles and joins Newmont having most recently served as Executive Vice President and CFO for MPLX, a publicly traded energy company formed by Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Prior to MPLX’s acquisition of MarkWest Energy Partners in 2015, Ms. Buese served for 11 years as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of MarkWest. Having worked in public accounting for 12 years, Ms. Buese also is a former Partner with Ernst & Young. She earned her degree in Accounting and Business Administration from University of Kansas and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Jennifer Cmil, Executive Vice President, Human Resources

Jen Cmil was appointed Executive Vice President, Human Resources in October 2019 and as Senior Vice President, Human Resources in June 2019 after having previously served as Vice President, Talent Management since February 2018. Jen joined Newmont in 2010 and has held the roles of Group Executive, Human Resources and Senior Director, Human Resources. Prior to Newmont, Jen held leadership positions in human resources across multiple industries, including Vice President of Human Resources at Level 3 Telecommunications, Senior Human Resources Director at KB Home and Human Resources Business Partner at Sun Microsystems, where she began her career in 1994. She has a proven track record of partnering with senior leaders to increase performance and engagement through partnership with Human Resources and she is passionate about developing individuals and teams. Jen received her Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University and her Master’s of Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.

Randy Engel, Executive Vice President, Strategic Development

Randy Engel was elected Executive Vice President, Strategic Development in September 2008, after having served as Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development since 2007. Mr. Engel has been with the Company since 1994, and has served in various capacities in the areas of business planning, corporate treasury and human resources. Mr. Engel holds a Master of Science degree in Finance from the University of Denver, and a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado.

Dean Gehring, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer

Dean Gehring was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer in June 2019 after joining Newmont as Regional Senior Vice President, South America in June 2017. He brings over 25 years of global operational experience, having lived in Canada, Indonesia, Peru and the US. Prior to joining Newmont, he spent 14 years with global miner Rio Tinto, in a variety of executive roles including President and Chief Executive Officer of Rio Tinto Minerals, Global Head of Safety and Security and General Manager of Resource Development for the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. Dean previously worked as Manager of Technical Services at Freeport's Grasberg mine and held various operational and technical roles with BHP Billiton prior to working for Freeport. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Idaho, and his Master’s of Science in Project Management from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Dean holds a Nevada Professional Engineering registration and Project Management Professional certification. In addition to having published papers for mining and project management journals, he has served on university advisory boards and is currently the co-chair of the SME Foundation Corporate Giving Committee.​

Stephen P. Gottesfeld, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability & External Affairs Officer

Steve Gottesfeld joined Newmont in 1997 and assumed the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability & External Affairs Officer in June 2019. Prior to this role Steve served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel, leading Newmont's Legal, Land and Ethics and Compliance functions. He served as Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs from 2006 to 2010. From 2004 to 2006, he was Newmont's Associate General Counsel responsible for our Latin America, Africa and Central Asia legal offices. From 2002 to 2004, he was Newmont's Associate General Counsel and General Manager of Newmont Peru S.R.L. in Lima, Peru. Prior to joining Newmont in 1997 as Senior Counsel, Steve was an Associate at Holland & Hart LLP. He earned a Law degree and a Master's degree in International Affairs from the University of Denver in 1993 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from The Colorado College in 1989.

Nancy Lipson, Executive Vice President and General Counsel

Nancy Lipson was promoted to Executive Vice President and General Counsel in June 2019, after previously serving as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel since February 2013. Prior to this role, she served as Associate General Counsel and Assistant Secretary since January 2010 in the substantive areas of commercial litigation, employment advice/litigation and executive compensation legal advice. Nancy’s role expanded to also include responsibility for global ethics and compliance, and subsequently shifted to include responsibility for global operational legal functions. From July 2005 to January 2010, she was Assistant General Counsel. Prior to joining Newmont in July 2005, she was Senior Counsel for Sports Authority and for Qwest Communications, and an Associate with the law firm of Otten, Johnson, Robinson, Neff & Ragonetti, P.C. She earned a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1995 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Colorado College in 1991.

Senior Officers

Alex Bates, Senior Vice President, Australia

Alex Bates was appointed Regional Senior Vice President of Newmont Australia in April 2017. Alex joined Newmont in 2015 as General Manager of Newmont Boddington Gold. Prior to joining Newmont, Alex was General Manager of Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Brockman Region. He started in iron ore as General Manager Yandicoogina Operations in February 2011 after many years of experience in leadership roles across the resources industry all over the world including Phalaborwa, Cape Town, London, Montreal and Brisbane. Alex has 25 years of experience in the resources industry and served as a Director on the Board of the Gumala Aboriginal Corporation. Alex is a member of the Board of the Minerals Council of Australia. Raised in Wales and Namibia, Alex studied Engineering in Cape Town and moved to Australia in 2004.

Terry Briggs, General Manager of Regional Integration

Terry Briggs has 20+ years of extensive international experience. Having joined Newmont in 2008, he has been the General Manager of Regional Integration for South America since 2017. Prior to this, Terry held leadership roles within the Corporate Development and Technical Services groups. Before coming to Newmont, he worked for MMG, Dundee, Goldfields, Teck, and Pasminco in a variety of operational roles.

Luis Canepari, Vice President and Chief Information Officer

Luis Canepari, of British Columbia, Canada, joined Newmont in April 2019 having most recently served as Goldcorp’s Vice President, Technology. Luis previously served as Director, Information Technology Applications. In his leadership at Goldcorp, he led the global information technology organization and was responsible for driving and overseeing enterprise-wide plans to further realize value from Goldcorp’s strategic business and technology investments, particularly leveraging SAP as the strategic platform. Prior to joining Goldcorp, Luis held the position of Director of Engineering and Construction in AES Corporation based in Arlington, Virginia. He holds a Master’s of Business Administration from Georgetown University, Washington, DC and a Bachelor of Science with a major in Systems Engineering from Universidad Metrolopolitana, Caracas, Venezuela. He is also a Certified Information Security Manager and a Certified Information Security Auditor.

Mark Casper, Vice President, Resource Evaluation and Mine Planning

Mark Casper joined Newmont in 2019 as Group Executive, Strategic Resource Development and now holds the role of Vice President Resource Evaluation and Mine Planning. Mark has more than 29 years of experience in the resource sector and brings technical, operating, project and corporate experience from a variety of global roles with multiple major mining companies. This experience spanned various commodities, geographies, and cultures, including development and leadership of multi-disciplinary teams. Prior to joining Newmont, Mark spent 25 years with Rio Tinto and more recently served as the General Manager for Strategic Production Planning. In that role, Mark was instrumental in developing and deploying an industry-leading methodology on advanced optimization, planning, modelling and evaluation. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mine Engineering from the University of Utah.

Nick Cotts, Senior Vice President External Relations

Nick Cotts was promoted to Senior Vice President, External Relations in June 2019 after serving as Vice President, External Relations and Social Responsibility since February 2016. Prior to these roles, he served as Group Executive – External Relations and Group Executive – Environment and Social Responsibility. He began his career at Newmont as Manager of Environmental Affairs in Newmont’s South America region in 1994. Throughout his over 20-year career with Newmont, he has served in various roles in the areas of environmental affairs, communications, external affairs, social responsibility, stakeholder engagement and sustainability. Nick has worked at numerous Newmont operations across the globe, with over 17 years of experience working at our Peru and Ghana operations. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy – Soil Conservation and a Master of Science degree in Range Science – Restoration Ecology, both from Colorado State University.

Mark Ebel, Vice President & Associate General Counsel

Mark Ebel was promoted to VP & Associate General Counsel in June 2019. He previously served as Associate General Counsel from October 2011 to May 2019. He is responsible for M&A, financing, and a variety of additional transactional and compliance activities. Prior to Newmont, Mark was CFO and General Counsel at Eyeris Inc., and Partner at Holland & Hart, LLP. He earned his J.D. degree from Stanford University and his B.A. in Mathematics and Political Science from Duke University.

Marcelo Godoy, Senior Vice President, Exploration

Mr. Godoy joined Newmont in 2012 as Group Executive, Technical Services and was promoted to Vice President, Resource Evaluation and Mine Planning in 2017. With over 20 years of experience, Mr. Godoy holds a PHD in Strategic Mine Planning from the WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre in Australia. He and his team lead the development of resource models, mine plans and ore control strategies that maximize ore body value and consistently deliver predictable outcomes to the business across the Newmont value chain. As the regional leader of Ore Evaluation Services at Golder Associates, he previously led the provision of Resource and Reserve Estimation for the mining industry in South America. He served on their board and managed a series of mining feasibility studies for clients such as BHPB, Codelco, and Antofagasta Minerals.

Melissa Gustafson, Vice President, Talent Management

Melissa Gustafson has been with Newmont for 13 years, holding various roles in Human Resources, and currently serves as the Vice President Talent Management. She previously held the position of Group Executive for Human Resources, where her responsibilities included leading the Business Partner team; she is also a member of the Integrations Management team for Newmont focused on Change Management and Communications and Organizational Design. During her tenure at Newmont, Melissa completed an assignment leading the Business Process Full Potential project focused on outsourcing select processes and improving the operating model for Finance, IT and Supply Chain. Prior to joining Newmont, Melissa served in Leadership Development roles at Frontier Airlines and Time Warner Telecom. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Denver in Colorado.

Joshua P. Hallenbeck, Vice President, Finance and Treasurer

Joshua P. Hallenbeck was appointed Vice President of Finance and Treasurer effective January 2017. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Hallenbeck served as Vice President of Finance and Treasurer for MPLX, a publicly traded energy company formed by Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Prior to MPLX’s acquisition of MarkWest Energy Partners in 2015, Mr. Hallenbeck served eight years in multiple leadership roles including Vice President Finance and Treasurer for MarkWest. Mr. Hallenbeck has more than 20 years of extensive accounting and financial leadership experience, including positions at The Siegfried Group, IBM, Enel and Harte-Hanks. Mr. Hallenbeck earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from State University of New York at New Paltz and a master’s degree in business administration from Marist College. He is a licensed certified public accountant in Colorado.

Francois Hardy, Senior Vice President Africa

Francois Hardy was promoted to Regional Senior Vice President, Africa in June 2019. Prior to this role, he served as Regional Project Director for Newmont's Australia and as the General Manager of Newmont's Tanami gold mine where he led a team responsible for improving the operation into a Tier 1 asset. He joined Newmont in 2002 and over his tenure has held a number of roles in Global Program Management, Business Excellence, Technical Services and Senior Site leadership roles at a number of Newmont's assets in Australia. Before joining Newmont, Francois held positions at Avmin Ltd and De Beers Consolidated Mines. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering from Technikon Witwatersrand, as well as Management Certificates of Competencies for Western Australia and South Africa.

Logan Hennessey, Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Logan Hennessey was elected Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in March 2015. Ms. Hennessey previously served as Assistant Corporate Secretary to the Board since 2010 and as Associate General Counsel from 2011 to 2015 and Senior Counsel, Corporate Securities from 2010 to 2011, working in the substantive areas of federal securities law, financing, M&A and transactions, on-going corporate reporting, corporate governance, general corporate matters and support of the Board of Directors and its Committees. Logan also currently serves as the Chair of Newmont’s Disclosure Committee. Prior to joining Newmont, Logan worked in private practice in the New York office of White & Case LLP. She holds a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an undergraduate degree from Wellesley College.

Shelly Huff, Vice President, Tax

Ms. Huff joined Newmont in January 2006 as Director, Tax Compliance in the corporate office, and was promoted to Group Executive in 2009 and then Vice President, Tax in June 2017. She is responsible for leading the Company’s corporate tax group and working collaboratively across the organization to ensure coordination and governance oversight of the regional tax teams. Ms. Huff brings more than 25 years of corporate and international tax experience to her role. Prior to joining Newmont, she spent the first half of her career working at Arthur Andersen. Ms. Huff holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed in the states of Colorado and Nevada.

Dan Janney, Senior Vice President, North America

Dan Janney was appointed Senior Vice President, North America of Newmont Corporation in October 2019. Dan brings with him 27 years of global operational experience leading teams through change in the mining industry. Dan joined Newmont in May 2017 as the GM, Integration and Optimization for North America and then took on the role of Interim GM, Operations Services for North America in February 2019. Prior to joining Newmont, Dan was a Technical Consultant with Alacer Gold Corp based in Turkey. Dan also held several roles at Rio Tinto including the Global Head of Productivity Delivery; General Manager of Bengalla Mining Company; General Manager, Energy Resources Australia; and General Manager Smelter with Kennecott Utah Copper. Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Montana Tech and has an M.B.A in Finance from the University of Utah.

John W. Kitlen, Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer

John W. Kitlen assumed the role of Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer in June 2016. He was elected Vice President, Internal Audit in October 2012, having previously served as Director, Internal Audit since joining Newmont in February 2011. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Kitlen served as Director, Internal Audit at Sun Microsystems for four years. Previously, he served as the Internal Audit Director for StorageTek and spent more than seven years with Level 3 Communications in various roles including Vice President of Internal Audit, Assistant Corporate Controller and Director of Finance. Mr. Kitlen began his career in public accounting with Deloitte and Touche. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Accounting from the University of Florida and is a Certified Public Accountant.

David Kristoff, Vice President, Total Rewards and Human Resources Systems

David Kristoff was elected Vice President, Total Rewards and Human Resources Systems in November 2012. In this role, he has responsibility for compensation, benefits, HR systems and company support of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. Prior to joining Newmont in February 2010, Mr. Kristoff served as the Senior Director of Compensation at Sun Microsystems where he led the global and executive compensation practices, as well as held responsibility for managing the Leadership Development and Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and a Master’s degree from Cornell University. Mr. Kristoff is a member of the Conference Board’s Council on Executive Compensation and is a regular speaker at executive compensation conferences.

Jessica Largent, Vice President, Investor Relations

Jessica joined Newmont in June of 2015 as a Finance Project Leader, spearheading the effort to streamline business reporting. In November of 2015, Jessica was promoted to Director of Portfolio Planning and Analysis where, among other things, she worked directly with regional and corporate leaders to optimize our portfolio and identify investment opportunities. In her most recent role, Jessica focused on customer service and process effectiveness to ensure effective analysis and communications, and reliable cost budgeting and forecasting. Prior to joining Newmont, Jessica led the Investor Relations function for Turquoise Hill Resources. In this role she led all aspects of Investor Relations, including serving as the primary contact for analysts and investors, and she was responsible for targeting and communications. Jessica has more than 12 years of mining industry experience in planning, financial reporting and accounting.

David McLaren, Vice President, Investments & Value Management

David McLaren has been with Newmont for more than 33 years, and has worked in a variety of locations including Australia, Canada, Denver, Indonesia and Nevada. Most recently, he spent nearly seven years as the Group Executive for Processing and Metallurgy in Technical Services, and accepted his current role as the Vice President, Investments & Value Management, in August. In his new role, he will be accountable for Newmont’s Investment System with a primary goal to improve value for our shareholders and other stakeholders. Mr. McLaren holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mineral Processing from Montana Tech University in Butte, Montana.

Ivan Mullany, Senior Vice President Projects

Ivan Mullany joined Newmont as Senior Vice President, Projects after previously serving as the Senior Vice President of Technical Services for Goldcorp since 2017. Prior to joining Goldcorp, he was the Global Director of Mining and Metals with Hatch and prior to that held roles at Barrick including Senior Vice President of Capital Projects and Senior Vice President of Operations Support. Ivan brings 30 years of experience in the mining industry across operations support, technical services and project development. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Extractive Metallurgy from Murdoch University in Australia.

Ramsey Musa, Vice President, Supply Chain

Ramsey Musa serves as Vice President, Supply Chain after having been elected Vice President, Global Supply Management in November 2014 and serving as interim head of Global Supply Chain Management since July 2014. He previously served as Group Executive, Supply Chain Operations and Capital Projects since 2012 and Senior Director, Global Supply Chain Operations since 2009 when he joined Newmont. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Musa was a Strategic Category Team Manager at Freeport McMoran and Senior Manager, Supply Chain Materials Commodity Management at Intel Corporation. Mr. Musa received his Bachelor of Science degree in Supply Chain Management from Arizona State University.

Alwyn Pretorius, Senior Vice President, South America

Alwyn Pretorius became the Regional Senior Vice President for the South America region in June 2019 after joining Newmont in 2016 as Regional Senior Vice President for the Africa region. He brings 23 years of gold sector experience to his role. In this role, Alwyn and his team delivered the Subika Underground project on schedule and within budget and progressed several other growth projects in Ghana. Under his leadership, Newmont was adjudged best company in Ghana by the country's investment promotion council and also recognized as the largest, highly compliant taxpayer by the Ghana Revenue Authority. Prior to joining Newmont, Alwyn served in various leadership roles at Harmony and ARMgold in South Africa, managing portfolios of up to 10 mines with annual production of 1.3 million ounces of gold. He has also led targeted programs that delivered substantial safety, sustainability and productivity improvements, and brings special expertise in government and labor relations to his role. He earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering and Mining Engineering from the University of Pretoria, and was Chairman of the South African Mines Rescue Services Board.

Suzy Retallack, Vice President, Health, Safety and Security

Suzy Retallack joined Newmont in 2019 as Vice President of Health, Safety and Security and brings 18 years of experience to the role having held several senior Health, Safety, Environment and Security roles within Rio Tinto. Her experience includes leading large and geographically diverse teams across Australasia and Africa, while driving strong health and safety performance. This includes building strong partnerships with operations and contractors, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the function she has led, and building industry leading practices and globally adopted critical lessons, fatigue and mental wellbeing programs. Suzy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Western Australia, a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy and a Master of Business Administration also from Curtin University in Australia.

Blake Rhodes, Senior Vice President, Strategic Development

Blake Rhodes was promoted to Senior Vice President, Strategic Development in June 2019. He started with Newmont in September 1996 and has spent the past 10 years in corporate development and Indonesia-focused roles, following 13 years in legal positions with the company. He worked extensively in Indonesia over the years, living in Jakarta and Singapore, and also worked and lived in Adelaide following the 2002 merger with Normandy Mining. Following his last four-year international assignment as Indonesia Country Manager and Regional Senior Vice President, Blake returned to the corporate office in May 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Iowa State University and a J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Phillip Starkle, Vice President, Operations Finance and Planning

Mr. Starkle was elected Vice President, Operations Finance in May 2016 after having served as Regional CFO for Asia Pacific since May 2011. In this role, Mr. Starkle leads our regional finance teams and serves as the CFO organization’s business partner to operations and the COO. Mr. Starkle was appointed as Group Executive Business (GEB) for our APAC region in 2011. Prior to that, he held the GEB and Vice President Finance roles in Africa from 2006 to 2011. Mr. Starkle has also held senior finance and accounting roles with Newmont in Central Asia. Mr. Starkle earned his degree in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Montana and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Bryan Teets, Vice President, Internal Audit

Mr. Teets joined Newmont as Vice President Internal Audit in April 2018 bringing more than 20 years of Audit and Accounting experience to the role. Prior to Newmont, he spent 11 years at MPLX as the Vice President, Internal Audit and Compliance. Mr. Teets also held several leadership roles at First Data Corp in the Audit, Compliance and Accounting departments. He started his career at Coopers and Lybrand. Mr. Teets holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Denver and is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Colorado.

Mike Wundenberg, Vice President, Operational Technology and Innovation

Mr. Wundenberg has over 20 years of experience in mining and has held various leadership positions within Newmont . He has been associated with Newmont since 1998 working at the Batu Hijau and Yanacocha operations and in the Australia region. He worked for BHP Billiton on the Olympic Dam Expansion project for two years and held the position of Manager, Mining prior to rejoining Newmont. Mr. Wundenberg successfully introduced the Full Potential program in 2013, and was appointed to lead the Asset Management function in 2015. He provided oversight on digital work conducted over 2017, including internal and external benchmarking work, digital assessments and other advancements in innovation and technology and was appointed Vice President, Operational Technology and Innovation in 2018 to define and realize the value proposition of Newmont’s technology and digital strategy and roadmap.
