Newmont’s Five Stage Process

Exploration

Our lifecycle begins with discovery. Newmont’s exploration geologists use advanced technology and deep geological expertise to identify and evaluate mineral deposits across the globe. Through early engagement with host communities and environmental screening, we ensure exploration is conducted responsibly and respectfully.

Our Goal: Identify high-quality, long-life deposits while building trust with stakeholders and safeguarding the environment.

Project Development

Once a resource is confirmed, we advance to rigorous project development. This includes detailed feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessments, and robust engagement with governments, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities. We ensure every project aligns with Newmont’s sustainability standards and global policies.

Our Goal: Design resilient, responsible projects that meet regulatory requirements and earn social acceptance.

Construction

With approvals in place, Newmont moves into construction—often the most intensive phase in terms of employment and infrastructure investment. We build the facilities, systems, and partnerships needed to safely operate the mine, with a strong focus on local hiring, supplier development, and environmental safeguards.

Our Goal: Construct world-class assets with long-term community and economic benefits.

Operations

This is the core phase of the mine’s lifecycle. Our teams extract and process ore to produce gold and other metals safely, efficiently, and responsibly. Throughout operations, we continue to invest in workforce development, health and safety, biodiversity protection, and inclusive growth.

Our Goal: Deliver sustainable value through operational excellence, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.

Closure and Reclamation

Newmont begins planning for closure before a mine even opens. When production ends, we work closely with stakeholders to transition the site responsibly—rehabilitating land, supporting economic alternatives, and monitoring long-term environmental outcomes. Closure is not the end, but the continuation of our legacy in the region.
