Genesis Awarded for Its Outstanding Safety Performance

September 27, 2016

On Tuesday, September 27, Newmont’s Genesis operations were awarded the Sentinels of Safety Award for its outstanding safety performance in the Large Open Pit Group.

The Sentinels of Safety awards are sponsored by the National Mining Association and were initiated in 1925 by then-Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover. These annual awards remain the nation’s most prestigious – recognizing the safest mines in the country having a minimum of 4,000 injury-free hours.

The original Genesis mine, located in our Carlin North Area, was completed in 2000, when the deposit was depleted. Drilling a few years later showed that the deposit continued at depth. In 2002, reserves were declared again in the Genesis district and permits were approved to resume mining again in 2011.

Representatives from Carlin joined the National Mining Association (NMA) and industry peers at the annual Sentinels of Safety awards luncheon, as part of MINExpo in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tim Burns, Senior Manager Health, Safety and Loss Prevention; Steve Johnson, Manager of Surface Operations; and Mike Schaffner, General Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the entire Carlin team.

“The Genesis success during 2015 was outstanding, not only for safety but also for production. I believe the result was achieved because the group cares about each other, they operate as a team and they look out for one another proving that a well-run operation can achieve a safe and efficient mine,” Tim Burns said of the team’s performance, adding, “The Newmont Safety Journey has proven its value over the years and will continue to drive our success in the future.”

Newmont’s Safety Journey – our global strategy to achieve zero harm – is committed to nurturing an environment where people feel empowered to work only when it is safe, stop work when they feel at risk, and have the courage to approach others when they see less safe behaviors or hazards. Steve Johnson sees evidence of such an environment at Genesis, saying, “The Carlin team’s progression along Our Safety Journey in conjunction with the “Vital Behaviors” and “Talking Safety” programs has paved the way for safe production in the Genesis district.”

Congratulations to the entire Carlin crew and supporting team members on this outstanding safety achievement!
