Yanacocha Wins Community Development Award

The San José Reservoir and the dedication of mine staff who helped earthquake victims resulted in the mine operation being awarded two national trophies in the country's "Creatividad Empresarial" (Business Creativity) contest. The Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPCA) acknowledged the mine for its creativity and development initiatives that benefit local communities.

The UPCA recognized Yanacocha for our innovative reservoir in its Environment Care category. The second award recognized the alliance among Yanacocha, Aramark and Pro Ecclesia Sancta-Archbishopric of Lima in the Commitment to Society category. When the terrible earthquake struck southern Peru in August 2007, the group constructed a camp - that complied with the highest standards set by the World Health Organization - to provide shelter for disaster victims.

This Corazón de Jesús shelter gave back hope to more than 800 people by means of material and psychological help. During the four months the shelter operated, earthquake victims helped organize donations and provided each other with spiritual and psychological support - helping them all reintegrate successfully into their daily routines.

"These two awards demonstrate Yanacocha's social and environmental commitment that continues to work for the development and future of Cajamarca," said Dave Baker, Newmont's vice president and chief sustainability officer.
