Yanacocha Receives OHSAS 18001 Certification for High Health and Safety Standards

Newmont's Minera Yanacocha operation recently received OSHAS 18001:1999 certification thanks to our compliance with stringent occupational health and worker safety standards.

The OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) standards are a series of international voluntary standards applied to occupational safety and health management, whose norms and requirements can be applied to companies of any size and location. These standards were developed by the main certifying companies in the world, including more than 15 countries of Europe, Asia and America.

Yanacocha Wins Community Development Award

The San José Reservoir and the dedication of mine staff who helped earthquake victims resulted in the mine operation being awarded two national trophies in the country's "Creatividad Empresarial" (Business Creativity) contest. The Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPCA) acknowledged the mine for its creativity and development initiatives that benefit local communities.

The UPCA recognized Yanacocha for our innovative reservoir in its Environment Care category. The second award recognized the alliance among Yanacocha, Aramark and Pro Ecclesia Sancta-Archbishopric of Lima in the Commitment to Society category. When the terrible earthquake struck southern Peru in August 2007, the group constructed a camp - that complied with the highest standards set by the World Health Organization - to provide shelter for disaster victims.

Unveiling a Long Term Water Supply

Water quality and supply have been the primary issues of concern for nearby communities of the Minera Yanacocha operation, as they rely on water for farming and agriculture. To address this, our operation built a reverse-osmosis plant and upgraded the existing acid-water treatment plants to ensure that only high-quality water leaves the property.
