African Opportunities

With the relatively recent startup of operations at Newmont Ghana, the mine has a diverse work force comprising 20 different nationalities, including Ghanians, Australians, Americans, Peruvians and people of other nations. While the variety of talent brings unique insight and experience to the operation, it also creates the need to educate employees about cultural differences, customs and work styles. A better understanding of others' backgrounds will foster relationship building, productivity, communications and acceptance.

The region's senior management, mine expatriates and senior Ghanaian staff are learning more about the variety of cultures represented at the mine. Newmont Ghana contracted with Tucker International, a provider of custom intercultural training and coaching, to aid in this process.

An interactive class of Ghanaians and expats meet regularly to discuss cultural and behavioral differences. Small groups conduct mock scenarios to help them adapt sensitively to each other, and to teach them how to work and live together better. They also discuss their various lifestyles, etiquette, foods and customs. By doing so, they improve communications and build rapport. With this improved understanding of cultural differences, employees are becoming more conscious in the way they behave and communicate. Tucker International has certified trainers from Newmont Ghana's Learning and Development group to expand the program internally.
