Newmont Asia Pacific offers student vacation work, similar to internships, as part of our commitment to the development of young mining professionals. Applications for summer vacation work during December-February at our Australian and New Zealand Operations open in June and close 31 August each year.

I'm coming up to the end of my first year as a geology grad with Newmont, and it's certainly been something different. Within a few weeks of starting I was on my own underground, dodging trucks and trying to tell miners with decades of experience how things were going to go. Although it was a steep learning curve, I wouldn't have it any other way. There were always people around if I needed help, but they were happy to step back and let me take on more responsibility when it came my way. Since those early days, I've learnt the ropes underground, moved to exploration, designed my own drill holes, joined the Emergency Response Team and learnt how to fight fires and deal with car accidents, and have always been learning more about the industry and my role within it.
I joined the Newmont grad program because, out of all the others I looked at, it gave me the best rotation between sites and jobs so I could see a whole range of possible futures, and also had good opportunities for working overseas. In a few weeks I'm off to New Zealand for a year, and can't wait.
Over the next few years I hope to continue to gain experience at a range of sites and roles. Judging by the year just past, it'll certainly be an adventure.
