Conservation Efforts by Newmont and Others Make Maggie Creek One of 10 “Waters to Watch” for 2009

Maggie CreekThe National Fish Habitat Action Plan (Action Plan) has unveiled the 2009 10 "Waters to Watch" list, a collection of rivers, streams, lakes, watershed systems and shores that will benefit from strategic conservation efforts to protect, restore or enhance their current condition. These waters represent a snapshot of current conservation effor In Nevada, Maggie Creek has been selected as one of the 10 "Waters to Watch" for 2009. Thanks to the combined actions of concerned community groups, nonprofit organizations, local watershed groups, Native American tribes, and state and federal agencies, these waters are being improved by planting stream-side vegetation, removing structures blocking fish from habitat and protecting bodies of water from effects of industrial processes, agriculture and livestock.

Newmont Invests in School’s Building Trades Program

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, NEVADA - With help from Newmont, the Building Trades class at Battle Mountain High School started their new classroom project of building a house. The land and materials for the house were donated by Newmont, and the entire house building process-from the foundation to the rafters-was completed by BMHS students.

Business Excellence Launches in Nevada

NEVADA - The Business Excellence (BE) initiative is a global effort developed around our strategic foundation of Leverage, Scope and Scale, which is achieved by creating operating and business efficiencies. Starting in 2009, Newmont researched the latest tools and methodologies used by Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, other consulting firms and Six Sigma training groups to aid in the development of a BE structure. By analyzing best practices from these companies, Newmont was able to develop a superior BE program that will help us succeed in reaching our strategic goals. BE is a partnership among operations groups, which uses Continuous Improvement, a Management Operating System, Standards and Standardization and Business Readiness in an effort to improve business efficiencies and deliver on our plans.

All Newmont Nevada Buses Now Equipped with Life-saving AEDs

NEVADA - A medical emergency on a Newmont-owned bus (see “Twin Creeks Life Savers Recognized at Regional Conference”) demonstrated to the Health Safety and Loss Prevention (HSLP) department the importance of making Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) standard equipment on all contract buses across Nevada.

Twin Creeks employees riding home together after an overnight shift jumped into action to save the life of a colleague experiencing a heart attack. The patient had a little luck, a certified emergency responder assisted by cool-headed co-workers, and a well-equipped, on board first aid/trauma kit – complete with AED - all on his side.
