Working Safely in the Arctic
When Newmont acquired the Hope Bay project from Miramar Mining in 2008, we began assessing health and safety risks, and establishing stringent management and training programs to protect the welfare of our employees and contractors. As this effort evolves, we expect to see reductions in injury rates as we strengthen our approach, and communicate how to safely explore and work in the remote Arctic region.
Through individual commitment and continuous improvement, the Hope Bay project is within reach of meeting Newmont's health, safety and loss prevention standards. To date, the team has worked 335 days without a lost time injury thanks to their dedication to working safely.
We are implementing new initiatives to further protect the welfare of our work force. These include conducting a hand-laceration prevention program, aligning local processes with corporate policies, developing an emergency response management system, and providing health and safety training to supervisors and senior leadership.
