Permitting and Environmental Assessments Underway
Hope Bay is in the early stages of project development. As such, Newmont has to meet regulatory and other requirements to build necessary roads and infrastructure required to support further exploration and assessment. Regulatory requirements for the Doris North project were met in the summer of 2008, and we secured commercial land lease approval from the Kitikmeot Inuit Association. Additionally, we received approval to extend an all-weather road from Doris North to the Windy Camp.
Other studies are underway to determine the optimal mining strategies for the greenstone belt to identify whether open pit or underground mining is optimal, where milling complexes should be located, and how to best manage waste rock and tailings.
These studies require the expertise of geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and environmental and community specialists, who rely on the latest mining analytical methods. Our ultimate goal is to develop the project in a way that benefits both our company and the people of the area. Exploration and development drilling will continue throughout 2009.
