Emerging Talent Program

From the moment we identify our new hires, Newmont is committed to helping them achieve success on the job. That’s why, in 2011, we launched a rotational development program for new college-graduate hires called the Emerging Talent Program. The Emerging Talent Program is a global program, with approximately 150 participants in 2011.

North American Emerging Talent Program

This specialized program kicks off with a three-day event that begins with a presentation from Newmont executives. It then includes an introduction to Newmont’s history, a review of our core principles and values, an overview of Newmont’s culture and a formal start to the participants’ mentoring relationship. The third day includes a tour of our North American operations and familiarization with our health and safety and environmental commitments.

Each participant is assigned a formal mentor to guide and shape their first two years at Newmont. Mentees meet with their mentors every other month to ensure they have the support they need to quickly assimilate to Newmont’s culture. In addition, all mentors go through a formal training to ensure they have the skills needed to pass on their knowledge and expertise to their mentee.

We believe that diverse experience early in a career can help to shape and mold a person’s career path. All participants are offered a regional rotational experience determined by business need and participant preference. A customized learning and development curriculum has been created for program participants. There are 11 content areas that are included to support the participant’s professional and personal development.

Year One Learning and Development Curriculum:

  • Transition from College to Career
  • Relationship Management
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Building Trust
  • Problem Solving Matters
  • Dealing with Conflict

Year Two Learning and Development Curriculum:

  • Adaptive Interaction
  • Change Management
  • Career Development
  • Working with other Cultures
  • Business Excellence

Networking is essential to a successful career. Emerging Talent Program participants from all regions are brought together at regular intervals throughout the year for the learning and development courses, as well as other teambuilding activities. They can also communicate at any hour of the day using Newmont-supported social networking technology. Additionally, the global group of participants comes together on a quarterly basis to share unique insights about their region; we call this a “Global Spotlight” conference call.

At the conclusion of the program, new-graduate hires have the experience, skills and confidence they need to face early career challenges, and to pursue the career path that inspires them most.
