On joining the Newmont Graduate Program, I had the opportunity to work at the Jundee operations. I am now part of a projects team located in the Northern Territory, which I am enjoying immensely. Currently, I have the responsibility of organizing and managing entire projects that involve obtaining quotes, writing justification documentation, supervising contractors, inspecting work areas and ensuring others are aware of how to follow relevant procedures.
Upon starting at Jundee, located in the center of Western Australia, I moved from Melbourne across to Perth. As a member of its Maintenance Department, I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects including: designing a control system for the remote bores, lubrication system for the SAG mill and mapping the entire underground electrical infrastructure. Being part of this department provided me with insight on how gold is mined and processed. I was able to collaborate with highly intelligent employees and gain a lot of valuable experience.
The main highlight that I’ve experienced since joining the Newmont Graduate Program was being responsible for replacing an outdated component that was an essential part of the milling process. The project involved dissecting the obsolete control system, and redesigning and implementing a new system with minimal disruption to production.
In my first year of the program, I attended a CAD drawing course, PLC course and obtained a senior first aid certificate. Newmont encourages graduates to achieve their full potential by giving them an active role in the organization and treating them with integrity, trust and respect, which I have found particularly rewarding.
During this year at Tanami, I will be exposed to many exciting new projects, such as constructing a new village, increasing refrigeration and power generation, as well as working with an extensive range of disciplines that will support me in becoming a better engineer.
