Discovery & Development

Newmont's goal to grow our business depends, in part, on our ability to find and develop new mining opportunities. The Discovery & Development (D&D) team is responsible for managing generative and near mine exploration activities, ore reserves, evaluating the early stages of major development opportunities, and delivering the projects to operations. We work efficiently to manage opportunities and deliver on our plans in a safe, environmentally and socially responsible manner.

Our objective is to fill Newmont's production pipeline with quality projects to replenish our reserves and sustain our business. This is achieved by identifying internal and external opportunities, which we evaluate and act upon in partnership with our Corporate Development team.

Newmont typically has several projects at various stages of development in our pipeline at any given time. We evaluate the viability of each project using a five-phased process called Stage Gate, which ensures we complete the necessary work and analysis before approving and advancing to the next stage of development.

Within our D&D team there are two delivery arms: Exploration and Business Opportunity Delivery

Exploration consists of both Generative Exploration and Near Mine Exploration. Generative Exploration makes discoveries by leveraging our land position in the world's most prospective domains, while our Near Mine team supports the production and growth of those discoveries by providing reserve replacement and optimizing existing land position near our world-class districts. Previous district-scale discoveries have led to the development of our Carlin, Batu Hijau and Yanacocha operations.

Business Opportunity Delivery manages the projects from opportunity creation in the early stage studies through project development to ensure safe, on-time, on-budget and fit-for-purpose delivery into commercial production in partnership with our operating regions.

The delivery arms are supported by three enablement teams:

These teams provide technical expertise, functional leadership, as well as project, portfolio and business planning across all stages of the pipeline, focusing on driving innovation and business effectiveness.
