Newmont Waihi Gold received the Accident Compensation Commission's (ACC) Workplace Safety Award at the 2009 Westpac Waikato Business Excellence Awards.
The operation had continued formalizing its safety journey this past year, which culminated in it receiving accreditation to the OHSAS ISO 18001 standard and the International Cyanide Management Code.
Our safety record hasn't been achieved by accident," said general manager Glen Grindlay in his acceptance speech. "We work ground up to make sure each day is a safe day. We want our employees to be empowered on every job to stop if they do not feel it is safe, empowered to look after their mates and empowered to be part of decision-making on our site."
The Westpac Waikato Business Excellence Awards are an annual event hosted by the Waikato Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with the University of Waikato's Management School.
