As anyone who has traveled to a foreign country knows, it can be difficult to understand the language and adapt to local customs. This challenge is especially daunting for expatriate employees assigned to work in a new country.
In Indonesia, a group of eight expatriots and contractors undertook an immersion course in Bahasa. Rajulisman Gensupv, of Batu Hijau's training and development department, took the group out of the classroom and required them to directly interact with hotel staff, street vendors and shopkeepers.
"The participants had to guide the mini bus driver to places like the Language Center of Mataram, traditional markets, national schools, museum, Labuapi village and restaurants," Rajulisman said. "This cultural and social interaction provided a more outstanding experience."
