Newmont Nevada received the Nevada Mining Association's 2009 Excellence in Mine Reclamation Award for its efforts to restore and preserve the state's environment. The company was recognized in two categories: Concurrent Reclamation and Wildlife Habitat Enhancement.
The operation was lauded for reclaiming the Woodruff Creek Exploration Project near Carlin, which reduced the establishment of noxious weeds in the area and led to overall reclamation success. Additionally, it was recognized for reclaiming two water basins at Twin Creeks, which provided habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.
"Many of the projects receiving these awards are unique in the United States, if not the world," said Alan Coyner, administrator of the Nevada Division of Minerals. "Nevada's mining industry should be commended for leading the way in successful reclamation and environmental protection."
Additionally, the NMA gave Twin Creeks and Phoenix first and third place awards, respectively, for Safety Achievement in the Open Pit-Large Mine category; Leeville placed third in the Underground category; and Lone Tree placed third in the Open Pit-Small Mine category.
Numerous individuals were recognized for their commitments to safety as well: Joe Driscoll (Leeville); Mark Jones (Twin Creeks); Tom Stannard (Twin Creeks); Brian Lewis (Underground); Michelle Nevarez (Phoenix); and Jason Jury (Phoenix).
