Department of Conservation (DoC) officers visited Newmont Waihi Gold to discuss and evaluate the Dotterel Watch partnership, which began in 1995 when workers at the Martha Mine observed the threatened New Zealand Dotterel nesting on the waste rock embankment's haul road.
This year, the mining operation funded a public education program, as well as vehicle and ranger to patrol the beaches during the dotterel-nesting season. The partnership has proven to be a recipe for success to secure the species future.
