Certification Milestone Achieved

Newmont achieved an important milestone in 2009 by certifying all of our applicable operations pursuant to the International Cyanide Management Code (Code). The Code is a voluntary industry program that provides independent, third-party certification for the life cycle of cyanide, from its manufacturing through transportation to and use at mines. Each certified operation is required to re-certify every three years.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became Newmont's first Australian operation to achieve certification, followed by Tanami and Jundee. Nevada's Gold Quarry mine received certification this year as well, in addition to Lone Tree, Midas, Phoenix and Twin Creeks. The Ahafo mine in Ghana and Yanacocha operation in Peru also were certified. Most recently, Newmont's Waihi operation in New Zealand became certified. Boddington, located in Western Australia, will be required to become certified by July 2012.

"With Waihi's certification, Newmont successfully completed one of our 2009 success measures," said Alan Blank, executive vice president, Legal and External Affairs. "Please join me in congratulating all of our relevant operations for reaching this milestone, as we work toward our Mission to build a sustainable mining business that delivers top quartile shareholder returns while leading in safety, environmental stewardship and social responsibility."
