An Independent Scientific Panel (ISP) established in 2006 to monitor potential environmental impacts at Buyat Bay presented updated data, which again validated a healthy marine environment.
Under the Goodwill Agreement with Indonesia, the ISP will monitor Buyat Bay for 10 years to verify the environmental quality in the vicinity of PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PTNMR) tailings placement area.
The second year of results found "no measurable release of arsenic and mercury from the deposited tailings and no evidence of adverse impacts from the tailings placement on marine environment or macrobenthic communities."
