The Global Compact is a United Nations initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation. Global Compact signatories commit to aligning their operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. Newmont has been a signatory since 2004.
Using case studies from a variety of industries, the Global Compact's report illustrates how companies from different sectors contribute to peace and development while operating in difficult environments. PTNNT's ability to engage stakeholders and encourage multicultural understanding in a work environment prone to interpersonal conflict was a featured best practice.
The mine's diverse 7,000 employee workforce has suffered conflict over the years, as many employees struggled to embrace ethnic, cultural or religious differences.
