Stimulating Economic Growth in Rural Peru

Poverty in Peru is most prevalent in remote rural areas where millions of people struggle to make a living through limited existing economic opportunities. To address this, the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative (CGSGI) brought together Newmont Minera Yanacocha and Gold Fields Limited in a unique partnership to expand market-driven economic development through the opening of an economic service center (ESC) in the region of Cajamarca.

CGSGI focuses on alleviating poverty in the developing world through market-driven development that creates jobs and increases incomes. Its programs aim to foster an enabling environment for long-term, sustainable economic development.

The Cajamarca ESC provides small-scale business consulting services and promotes the development of sustainable economic corridors by efficiently linking producers to markets for their products. The office relies on a handful of staff to research, identify and manage product development opportunities to benefit small producers. CGSGI also is introducing new monitoring and evaluation criteria to ensure the project meets poverty reduction objectives in Cajamarca.

Earlier this year, former President Bill Clinton and Frank Giustra traveled to Latin America to see firsthand the progress being made and speak directly to the people whose lives have been improved by the initiative.

"We're helping to connect people with markets, education, nutrition, health care and other tools they need to create jobs, lift themselves out of poverty and drive sustainable development in their communities," Clinton said.
