Newmont Waihi Gold's mine rescue team recently took a former service tunnel under a Perth college was converted into a mock underground mine to give students studying field exploration, geotechnical, surveying and occupational health and safety the firsthand experience of working in this setting.
Newmont teamed with other miners, government agencies and a higher education facility in Western Australia to fund the mine, which came complete with rock bolts, mesh, ventilation equipment and safety gear. The tunnel's cement walls were lined to simulate rock faces containing gold, copper and nickel. It also contains a mock refuge chamber.
