Funding Given to Restore Peruvian Cultural Heritage Site

Cajamarca, Peru

An important cultural heritage site in Cajamarca that dates back to 1699 is being restored thanks to the generous donations of Minera Yanacocha’s corporate foundation, the Asociación Los Andes de Cajamarca (ALAC) and others.

More than $1.6 million was given to improve the Belen Complex, an impressive historical building with Castilian medieval influences. Alberto Benavides, board chairman of the Buenaventura Mining Company, took the initiative to raise funds to maintain the historic center that once was used as a hospital center.

ALAC supported Benavides by providing more than $450,000 for the effort. The balance came from the World Monuments’ Fund, an independent organization dedicated to saving the world’s most treasured places. The Provincial Municipality of Cajamarca, Regional Culture Office and Yanacocha’s Cajamarca Solidarity Fund also generously contributed.

The monies raised will pay for restoration and conservation of Belen and Las Monjas squares, murals, furniture, a cemetery and  graveyard chapel; technical studies to improve stone structures; lighting of the churches Belen and La Recoleta; and creation of an urban mobility plan.
