Yapa means "Aboriginal person" in the local Warlpiri language and the Yapa Crew is just that - locally recruited Aboriginal men and women from the Tanami region of the Northern Territory. They are on-the-job trainees at Newmont's Tanami operation, who perform a variety of tasks.
The mine has a well-established prevocational program to equip Indigenous workers with related skills. The Yapa Crew is an employment option to this annual program, providing more year-round work as projects arise.
