When students of Waihi Central School learned of a digital video competition sponsored by Panasonic, they took it upon themselves to document what it was like to attend school directly across from the Martha open pit.
These young filmmakers showcased how Newmont Waihi Gold operates, as well as how it treats water, manages waste rock and mine tailings, and plans for mine closure. Mine staff safely escorted the students around the site to capture images, but the students managed the entire production themselves.
Their hard work paid off, as they represented New Zealand's primary schools and advanced to Singapore for the next round of competition. View the prize-winning video at http://www.panasonickwn.co.nz.
