Martha Mine recorded an operating noise level of 124 decibels in January, yet no operations were stopped, no exceedences logged, and no regulators were informed despite the permitted maximum noise level being 50dBA at the residential boundary.
The noise originated from a child screaming into a 'yell-o-meter' operated by the operation's environmental department, just one of many child-friendly activities during the recent Martha Mine Open Day. Fortunately, the scream was not cause for concern by the crowd of nearly 6,000, and the parents of the child took home a free set of ear plugs.
Martha Mine Open Day is held in partnership with Vision Waihi Trust, to demystify the mining process and raise money for the community.
"This is a chance for Waihi to show what it's got, it's not just about the mine," said Kelvyn Eglinton, Waihi's external affairs manager. "It's a real buzz to see so many visitors here and a real tribute to the town."
Mine dump trucks and loaders greeted guests, who were allowed a close-up view. Visitors enjoyed helicopter rides, a rescue helicopter display, mine safety demonstrations, gold panning and rock fossicking, among other activities.
Community groups took the opportunity to showcase their wares and activities as well.
