Carlin, Nevada
After a decade of mining, Deep Post, Newmont Nevada's high-grade underground mine, ceased production at the end of 2009. The mine has depleted all known economic ore and Newmont's access agreement with Barrick expired year-end.
Deep Post employees will transfer to the nearby Leeville or Chukar mines, but a few will remain onsite to maintain the mine and oversee exploration drilling. Contractors will provide support on shorter-term projects at Newmont and other mine locations. Entry through the Deep Star mine, where a mile-long cross cut was put in place to connect it with the Deep Post mine, will remain intact and could provide for access should additional economic ore be discovered.
Deep Post has been recognized by the Nevada Mining Association for its safety performance throughout its years of operations. In 2009, no worker sustained a Mine Safety and Health Administration Reportable or Lost Time Accident.
Initial development started in 1999, when the first portal was excavated in the bottom of Barrick's Betze-Post Pit and construction of the surface facilities and infrastructure began. Since then, nearly 3 million ounces of gold have been removed.
