Newmont, ICMM Tackle Climate Change

Denver, Colorado

Newmont is partnering with the International Council on Mining & Metals and other member companies to develop a global solution to manage human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on climate change. In November 2009, the ICMM released a formal statement on climate change, committing its members to contributing to the global effort to transition to a low emissions global economy.  This statement focuses ICMM member responsibility on:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, measuring progress and reporting results;
  • Promoting technical innovation and creativity in low greenhouse gas emissions technologies while enhancing energy and resource efficiency;
  • Ensuring efficient use of renewable and non-renewable natural resources;
  • Developing appropriate adaptation strategies specific to our operations; and
  • Contributing to the sustainable development of local communities and societies in adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Our company has been actively working to better understand our impacts and seek out ways to reduce our carbon footprint.  Some of our efforts include:

  • Developing a climate change strategy to sustainably manage climate change risks and responsibly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2005, resulting in our selection to the Carbon Disclosure Project Leadership Index last year;
  • Becoming a Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry in 2008 and committing to publicly report our independently-verified greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Purchasing $1 million in forestry carbon offset credits for use in the Australian Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme;
  • Adopting energy-efficiency best practices and implementing cost-effective efficiency projects, such as our $400,000 in savings per year from our Carlin, Nevada roaster hot-gas recycle project that reduces our annual emissions by 5,000 metric tons;
  • Moving our corporate offices into a environmentally sustainable, LEED gold-certified building;
  • Evaluating our resources for emissions offset opportunities such as algae ponds to consume carbon dioxide being released from our Nevada power plant; and
  • Working with renewable energy experts to power our operations with renewable and low-emission energy sources such as hydro, geothermal, wind, solar and biofuels.
