Three ships, six tugboats and 12 barges traveled more than 50,000 nautical miles this past summer with cargo bound for Newmont’s Hope Bay project in northern Canada. The vessels carried 22 million liters of fuel and 20,000 tons of additional cargo – more than five times the 2009 shipment.
After eight weeks of overcoming logistical and weather-related challenges, the Hope Bay team successfully delivered dry cargo in late September, fuel in early October and was able to safely return all vessels out of the Arctic. Additionally, the sealift team worked 893 days and 1.7 million man hours without environmental issues or a lost-time incident.
“The sealift was a tremendous team effort that demonstrated the core values of Newmont at its very best,” said David Thomas, engineering procurement construction manager. “A special thanks not only to the Newmont team, but to our suppliers, vendors, contractors, stevedores and all those that supported this historical accomplishment.”
