With gold trading above $1,200 an ounce and financial advisors touting its value in the face of currency instability and mounting government deficits, a new book on the history of Newmont Mining Corporation details the evolution of the company that gave birth to the modern gold industry.
Jack H. Morris, former Wall Street Journal reporter and vice president of Investor Relations at Newmont, wrote Going for Gold: the History of Newmont Mining Corporation (University of Alabama Press). The book traces our company’s history from the turn-of-the-century creation by a wealthy Wall Street executive to our leadership in every facet of modern mining — exploration, technology, legal theory, finance and more recently, environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility.
Going for Gold is a “fascinating book I found difficult to put down,” said Jack Daemen of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno. “It is a superb, informative, instructive and enjoyable read.”
Morris had unique access to the company’s documents and people, interviewing more than 80 Newmont officers and employees. Sensitive about objectivity, he insisted on working at arm’s length from Newmont, which exercised no control over the content of the book.
“What makes Going for Gold unique is that decision makers were able to speak candidly about transforming events without going through a PR filter,” said Morris. “The men and women I interviewed had wonderful stories that make Newmont’s history both real and relevant.”
Going for Gold can be ordered from: the University of Alabama Press and is available in bookstores and Amazon.com.
