Throughout the mine life cycle, from the earliest exploration activity through to mine closure, we strive to engage and consult with communities and governments that host our operations with respect and transparency.

For the past several years, we have undertaken to put in place policies, standards, and practices to guide our operations in building effective and positive relationships with our host communities.  Questions remain, however, as to whether we have been able to achieve such lasting relationships in all of the diverse and complex local contexts in which we operate.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2007, nearly 92% of Newmont shareholders, supported by a recommendation from the Newmont Board of Directors, voted in favor of a resolution committing the company to conduct a global review and evaluation of Newmont’s policies and practices relating to the existing and future relationships with local communities, including aspects of potential conflict and opposition. The Board has charged its Environmental and Social Responsibility Committee with the task of developing and implementing a plan of work that will respond to the resolution.

This webpage has been developed to provide a venue for interested stakeholders to learn more about the process that is being undertaken and the actors involved, and to provide a space for project updates and products as they become available.
