Newmont spent 10 years exploring the volcanic islands of Indonesia before opening its first mine, Minahasa, at the northeastern tip of Sulawesi in 1996. Batu Hijau, a large copper-gold deposit on the island of Sumbawa, shipped its first concentrate at the end of 1999.
Copper is one of the most widely used metals in the world in the construction, electrical utility, communications and transportation industries. It also has many manufacturing, industrial and consumer applications and is used to make brass.
