Newmont Home Operations Australia & New Zealand Jundee, Western Australia

Our Jundee operation lies in the Yandal Goldfield, approximately 480 miles (800 kilometers) northeast of Perth and 50 kilometers northeast of the predominately Aboriginal community of Wiluna.

In 2007, Newmont closed the open pit, leaving just the underground mine with a nearby ball mill, which resulted in 298,000 equity ounces of gold sold during the year. The mine had an estimated 1.5 million equity ounces of gold reserves at the end of 2007.

Work force

This mine is a remote, fly-in, fly-out operation. Nearly all of our approximately 600 employees and contractors are Australian nationals. Like Tanami, Jundee has focused much of its efforts on developing and delivering a comprehensive pre-vocational training program aimed at equipping Aboriginal participants with the necessary skills to progress to full traineeship positions within the operation.

Community

In the nearby small indigenous community of Wiluna, Jundee sponsors a medical center and a community swimming pool to encourage children to attend school, as they cannot swim unless they do. The mine also has worked to facilitate the development of Aboriginal business enterprises, including establishing an independent labor hire company that supplies contractors for both project and service work.

Environment

As closure nears, mine crews continually rehabilitate land disturbed by mining through returning waste rock to the ground, revegetating facilities, plugging drill holes and seeding the drill pad. In this dry area, the mine also strives to reuse and recycle more water than extracted or collected from rainfall.
