Rosie Da Costa, Mine Exploration Geologist, Tanami Operations

Rosie Da Costa, Mine Exploration Geologist, Tanami Operations

Hi, I’m Rosie, and I am now a Mine Exploration Geologist with Newmont Asia Pacific.

I applied to Newmont Asia Pacific’s graduate program because I felt that it would give me the opportunities and experience that I need to form a great platform for a future in the mining industry.  Coming out of uni, I felt that it was important to be trained and mentored in the industry, so I could continue to learn and develop my skills.  I was attracted to work with Newmont as they are a large mining company, and can therefore provide me with training and guidance, as well as the opportunity to experience mining operations around the world.  Newmont’s graduate program is excellent, as it allows me to work at two different mining operations, to get some great experience, and meet a variety of people.

I spent my first year within the exploration department at Newmont's Waihi Operation, on the North Island of New Zealand. Coming straight from uni to work in another country was a fantastic experience, and I had a great time learning about the mining industry in New Zealand, as well as travelling around the country on my days off! I have gained a lot from my year in Waihi, which has seen me logging drill core and supervising drill rigs, as well as taking part in soil and stream-sediment surveys, and mapping projects. I think that it's fantastic that my job is to go and look for gold in the bush!

Last year I returned to Australia to work in the Tanami desert. I enjoyed the challenges that working in a remote site provided, especially after living by the beach in my first year!

I have really enjoyed the Graduate Program with Newmont. From the very first day I felt welcomed and part of a team, the Values, goals and opportunities that Newmont provides their employees were very clear, and the care that Newmont takes of its graduates was really appreciated. The Graduate Collegiate is a very important tool I think for the graduates to get together and "bond", especially meeting the people that you are going to be living and working with for the next year. The support and networking that the Collegiate provides is excellent, and probably one of the highlights of my time in Newmont so far.

In the future I hope to continue with exploration work, and am looking forward to contributing to greenfields exploration as we search for more gold. Newmont has many opportunities and pathways for graduates, and I am looking forward to working around the world with Newmont.

Oliver Liebrich: Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Tanami Operations

Oliver Liebrich: Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Tanami Operations

I completed my Engineering degree in 2006 and graduated with honours, and wanted a job that was interesting and provided challenges and opportunities. I'd previously undertaken vacation work with Newmont, and had enjoyed the type and variety of work. It was therefore that I accepted a position with Newmont as a graduate mechanical engineer.

During 2007 I worked at the Pajingo site in North Queensland, undertaking a variety of tasks and roles. To gain a diverse range of exposure and experience, I worked in many different areas of the operation. This involved working with the plant operators, surface (mill) maintenance team, gold room operators, underground maintenance team and underground maintenance planners. Thus I gained some practical hands-on experience as well as being involved in design and planning. I was also part of the emergency response team, which involved training in a team facing different situations and challenges.

In 2008 I will be transferring to the remote Tanami mine in the Northern Territory to complete my final year of the graduate program. I will be working in the projects department, and am looking forward to the challenge and experience gained from working with others on large projects. This site will also allow me to experience a fly-in fly-out arrangement.

I enjoy working for Newmont because of the challenges the mining industry provides, the opportunities to work in different locations and the invaluable experience I gain. I hope to further this experience by working overseas with Newmont.

Gus Connor: Minerals Process Engineer, Newmont Tanami Operations

Hi I'm Gus and have recently finished my graduate program with Newmont Asia Pacific and have been taken on by our Tanami operation.

I originally chose to apply for the graduate program with Newmont because of the lifestyle and flexible development options on offer and on completion have certainly not been disappointed!

I completed my first year in the beautiful Waihi operation in New Zealand and as well as an amazing lifestyle, as a Metallurgist I was able to get all the operational experience I wanted and needed, as well as being heavily involved in the future ores testwork program and successful transitional period for the mill to underground ore processing, presenting a paper at the AusIMM NZ conference.

This year I have spent at the Tanami operation in the NT FIFO from Brisbane and am staying on here as a Plant Metallurgist. I have plenty on my plate with a significant gravity circuit upgrade in progress as well as cyanide reagent optimisation as part of a continuous improvement initiative as well as cyanide code requirements.

I personally liked the flexibility of the program but even more so the adage that 'you only get out what you put in' applies so if you expect to be babied the whole way you will not be getting anywhere near the value you could get from the program.

Michael Belperio: Graduate Exploration Geologist, Regional Exploration

Michael Belperio: Graduate Exploration Geologist, Regional Exploration

My name is Mike, and I'm a Geologist on Newmont's Graduate Program.

I applied for the graduate program mid-way through my Honours geology year at Adelaide University in 2006. My commencement with Newmont began the following February. I was keen to be a part of the Newmont graduate team as I thought it important to be a part of a company with the resources and opportunities that could provide me with an effective and well-rounded mentorship. After completing a summer as a vacation student at Newmon't Tanami operation, I was sure that Newmont was capable of fulfilling those criteria.

Currently (at the start of 2008) I am finishing up my first year on the program, having spent the previous year as a Mine Geologist at the Martha operation in Waihi, New Zealand.

There I learnt volumes in the field of production geology, and the day to day issues that arise within that realm. I will be spending my second year on the program working with the regional exploration department, based in Western Australia. This way I will be exposed to two completely different aspects to minerals-related geology during my time on the program (and also to the geology of two different countries). This, I believe, will allow me to as informed as I can be when it comes time to think about in what direction I would like my geology career with Newmont to head.

Kristine Dudgeon: Graduate Geologist, Jundee Operations

Currently, as a Graduate Geologist for Newmont Asia Pacific, I have just completed a year in regional greenfields exploration and am about to transfer to the Western Australian Jundee Operation as an Underground Geologist.

During my last year of university I applied for numerous positions with Western Australian mining companies. After an interview with my current boss I decided that Newmont would give me the best exposure to a broad range of geological experiences, including a chance to travel around Australia while being paid for working in a field that I was passionate about. On completion of my degree at university I moved from Melbourne to Perth to begin the Newmont Graduate Program. I applied for a position in the program with the impression that Newmont would enable me to continue learning in a safe, challenging and enjoyable environment. Being a large mining company, Newmont gives me the opportunity to obtain a high level of experience and understanding in a variety of fields. When I finished university I had limited knowledge of the mining industry, however, numerous visits to different mining and exploration sites, as well as the completion of training modules, has enabled me to further develop my skills and understanding of mining and mineral exploration related processes.

I started in 2007 with the Perth-based regional exploration team working on two projects based in the Goldfields around Kalgoorlie. My role involved assisting with project management and target generation, drill site supervision at remote exploration sites, and generating maps and geological models. These tasks provided opportunities to work both as an individual and in a team environment.

The graduate program has enabled me to gain experience in many areas of geology in the mining and mineral exploration industry from remote exploration to production geology in both underground and open pit operations. My transfer to the Jundee Operation as an Underground Production Geologist will further develop my skills, providing me with the necessary experience to work in a variety of positions and environments. Once I have completed the program this year, I believe I will have developed a strong knowledge and skill base that I can further build upon and advance to a new level in my career.
