The Asia Pacific Region
During the past decade, Newmont's Asia Pacific region has grown to become the company's largest asset. These years have brought tremendous opportunity and challenges to the company, from the discovery of additional ore reserves to ensuring the responsible management of local environments.
Newmont acquired its Australian, New Zealand and Indonesian assets as part of the acquisition of Normandy Mining in 2002, and mining in Indonesia began in the late 1990s. Newmont also has the Martha open pit and Favona underground mines in Waihi, New Zealand.
Our newest Australian asset is the Boddington operation, which poured its first gold in September 2009 and produced its first one million ounces in March 2011. In 2010, Boddington Gold produced 728,000 ounces of gold and 58 million pounds of copper.
Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO)
As a large energy user in Australia, Newmont triggers the requirement to participate in the Australian Government's Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program. The EEO program requires participants to conduct detailed assessments of their energy use in order to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Participants are also required to publicly report the results of the assessment and the business response to the opportunities that have been identified. Further details on the EEO program can be found at www.energyefficiencyopportunities.gov.au.
Click here for Newmont Australia's 2011 public report, which covers the EEO assessments conducted during the five year period from July 2006 to June 2011. We will be following-up on previous results during 2012 with the Site Energy Teams at each operation, and developing a plan for the next five year cycle of the EEO. Newmont will continue to update the results of the EEO program annually on our website.
