KCGM Certified to Cyanide Code

The International Cyanide Management Institute certified the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine in Australia as being compliant with the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC - "Code"). The Code is a voluntary industry program for companies involved in the production of gold using cyanide, as well as companies producing and transporting this cyanide. Our operation must be re-audited every three years to maintain compliance.

KCGM was the first Newmont operation in Australia to be compliant with the Code. Jundee, Tanami and Waihi achieved certification in 2009. Boddington is required to be compliant with the Code by July 2012.

Other Newmont operations achieving certification under the Code include Ahafo in Africa; Lone Tree, Midas, Phoenix and Twin Creeks in the United States; and Yanacocha in Peru. As a result, 100% of Newmont's applicable operations in all of our regions are now certified pursuant to the ICMC.

Knocking Out Greenhouse Gas

As a member of the Australian Greenhouse Challenge Plus program, KCGM is keeping an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and implementing emission abatement activities. Over the past several years, KCGM has also undertaken extensive environmental rehabilitation and tree planting to create a green belt between the mine and the town, which is located just a quarter mile (400 meters) away. Since 1991, about 210,000 trees have been planted to control dust and provide a visual barrier to our mine.
